What can I grow in a Tower Garden?

How big is a Tower Garden™ and where do I place it for optimal growing?
The basic Tower Garden unit (pictured at below) is 5 pots tall and can grow 20 plants in a 2.5′ x 2.5′ footprint. The Tower Garden™ can be easily rotated for optimal lighting around the entire unit.

  • Up to three Extension Kits can be used per Tower Garden. Each Extension Kit consists of two pots (8 planting spaces). We do not recommend using more than one Extension Kit outdoors due to greater susceptibility to wind gusts. Taller towers are better suited for an indoor or greenhouse environment.
  • If more than one Extension Kit is used, you will also need to purchase the High Capacity Submersible Pump (available in our online store).
  • Most food crops generally require full sun or high light for optimal growing conditions. During the heat of the summer, the Tower Garden™ should be placed in a location that will get shade starting mid-afternoon. If you have shade locations in your yard, it is best to have the Tower Garden™ shaded later in the day when temperatures are hot.  Read What you need to be a successful Tower Gardener.
  • It is also helpful to follow the advice for specific crops on the back of the seed packets.  Quality seeds purchased from a local garden center are ideal for producing great crops in the Tower Garden™. We recommend Non-GMO seeds. Read Non-GMO, Organic, Hybrid and Heirloom Seeds.  What does it all mean?
  • Be sure a good clean water source is nearby. NEVER use softened water, heavily chlorinated water, or very hard water, as it may damage your plants. Read What Water Source Should I use in My Tower Garden?
  • An electrical outlet nearby is preferred over a long extension cord. ALWAYS use a weatherproof box when using outdoor extension cords.

How is produce grown in a Tower Garden™?
Seeds for the Tower Garden™ are started in a natural rock fiber seeding cube. The Tower Garden™ has a 20 gallon reservoir or storage tank at its base. This reservoir stores the Tower Tonic Ionic Mineral Nutrient Solution. Inside the reservoir is a small, low wattage submersible pump. The pump draws the nutrient solution up through the center of each pot all the way to the top of the Tower Garden™. From there, the nutrient solution drips through a special device that evenly cascades the nutrient solution over the plant roots. On the journey down the tower, the nutrient solution feeds the plants’ roots and becomes highly oxygenated as gravity tumbles it back down to the reservoir. This process is continually repeated providing fresh oxygen, water, and nutrients to the roots on the plants. Because of the above mentioned process, the food crops in the Tower Garden™ will grow faster than they would in soil, and will have to be harvested on a regular basis! The Tower Garden™ is so simple! No weeding, tilling, kneeling, or getting dirty! The Tower Garden™ is truly the world’s first plug and play vertical garden!

How Tower Garden Works

How Tower Garden Works

Why is the produce grown in a Tower Garden healthier than store bought Produce?
Traditional produce is grown and harvested for shipping long distances and for a long shelf life. In many cases, consumers end up buying bland-tasting produce that is days or weeks old, lacking in nutrition, and laden with pesticides. Many people lose their desire to eat healthy, fresh vegetables simply because they do not taste very good or very fresh. Nature intended food to taste incredible, not bland. The Tower Garden™ can produce fresh, great tasting, and pesticide free produce all year long outside your own back door. The ability to harvest all your own fruits and vegetables fresh and vine ripened from your own backyard year round, will have you enjoying food every day, the way nature intended! Many Tower Garden™ owners did not know how good food could taste until they tried produce grown from a Tower Garden™ for the very first time. After having a Tower Garden™ for a few months, they are naturally eating their recommended servings of fresh vegetables on a daily basis. Testimonials: “I was originally interested in The Tower Garden™ to combat the rising cost of gas and food I could no longer afford. I was also interested because the US government in early 2008 told us that eating certain types of contaminated produce could make us ill or even kill us! To this day, they still do not know where the diseases came from and people are still getting sick. I felt let down by our government and decided to take matters into my own hands! I purchased several Tower Gardens™ so I could produce the majority of my daily produce from home. Losing weight and eating healthy food that is pesticide free is an extraordinary health benefit I get from my Tower Garden™. I am now buying sustainably grown organic meat as well. Thank you for this product and the work your company is doing!” – Susan G., Orlando, Florida

Why is the Tower Garden™ “Green”?

The Tower Garden™ recycles precious earth minerals and water, allowing the plants to use as little as 5 percent of the nutrients and water that is commonly used in conventional and organic farming. The pH balanced ionic minerals and plant nutrients found in the Tower Tonic (Ionic mineral based plant food used in the Tower Garden™), produce strong, healthy plants that can better protect themselves from plant pests and disease. This reduces the use of organic and conventional pesticides. These technologies can reduce your carbon footprint by recycling natural resources, reducing pesticides, and avoiding the transportation and storage of food by consuming food grown from your own home. The Tower Garden™ is also made right here in the United States, providing jobs for Americans and avoiding long distance shipping from overseas. Consumer safety is extremely important to us! Having the ability to walk into our manufacturing facility every day assures the integrity of what goes into our products. Living Towers is a proud supporter of healthy people and a healthy planet.

Is the Tower Tonic “Organic”?

In organic growing, the fertilizers used must come from a plant or animal base. In hydroponic systems, we use earth minerals, otherwise you’d have dead plant-or-animal matter floating around, and it would rot and stink. The thing is, plants have 16 major macro and trace elements that they require. Whether those come from earth minerals, or from minerals in organic matter is irrelevant. [Note: minerals are, by definition, inorganic. The word organic actually means carbon-based, or living, which refers specifically to plants and animals. Hence, an earth mineral cannot be organic.] The key difference between field organics and hydroponics is that we utilize earth minerals refined in their purest form so that we know exactly what’s going into the plants in the right formulation to get what we want to get out of the plant. NASA worked to develop mineral solutions that would put more nutrients into plants so that they could grow a healthier plant (for astronauts in space, because their food sources are so very limited). The question must be asked: if we’re raising nutrient dense, healthier plants for astronauts, why aren’t we doing the same thing in agriculture? And the answer is, invariably, we’ve never done it because we don’t have to. Agriculture is very price-point based; whether it’s organic or conventional, farming isn’t a high profit venture, so farmers put the least amount that they can into producing a crop. One of our key goals with the Tower Gardens™ was to develop a system that you could open up and, without having a bunch of expensive electronic equipment (which you’d typically need to do with conventional hydroponics), anyone out there could set up in 30 minutes. And the one nutrient solution they’d use (as opposed to the dozens they’d need for different crops with conventional hydroponics) would work well for tomatoes, for flowers, for lettuces, for cucumbers – whatever crop they want to grow. And that’s really what we did with the Tower Tonic™: rich, abundant, ionic earth minerals that are important for plant growth. And those minerals would be nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulpher, and trace minerals, like boron, chlorine, manganese, zinc – these are all essential for good, healthy plant growth. But in addition to that, we have a wide range of trace minerals that are also important to human health, and they’re in that nutrient solution in very small amounts, and basically the plant may or may not need to use those minerals but they are available for take-up to help aid in the nutrition, and the health of the plant. Also, one of the key differences in the Tower Tonic™ compared to any organic or conventional fertilizer that’s used in agriculture today is that we stay away from ammoniacal nitrogen. Instead, we use nitrate nitrogen. A good comparison to human nutrition is the difference between white table sugar and a complex carbohydrate found in a grain or vegetable. Ammoniacal nitrogen used with plants force quick, explosive growth, which is why modern farmers use it. The problem is that with that kind of explosive growth, you get a weak cell structure; the most important component to every plant and cell wall is calcium, and when a plant is forced to grow quickly like that, it becomes more susceptible to insect damage and pest damage. Just like if we were to eat lots of table sugar: we get quick energy, and we crash later – our immune system is weakened, we feel tired, etc. But eating a complex carbohydrate gives our bodies longer-lasting energy that doesn’t take a toll on our health. The same is true for plants that are grown with nitrate nitrogen. There are several dozen differences between the Tower Tonic™ and conventional hydroponic solutions and systems, but how we feed our plants is just one of the key differences: it’s rich in calcium, and rich in trace minerals that are important to people. Balanced plant health and wellness, along with human health and nutrition, is at the center of what we’re about
